We asked builders in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space what they thought about the industry…and added some random zingers to keep them on their toes!
This week, we asked Dawn Newton, co-founder and COO of Netki, a provider of remote digital authentication technology that promotes KYC/AML compliance.
Dawn Newton is COO and co-founder of Netki, a provider of know-your-customer and anti-money laundering technology built for blockchain. Dawn’s work stems from her desire to increase global access to crypto assets in a sustainable, secure and fair way. At Netki, Dawn contributed to the development of OnboardID, which facilitates authentication and onboarding of custodial wallets, and TransactID, the only solution fully compliant with the Financial Action Task Force Travel Rules.
With 30 years of technical team management experience and growing innovative companies, Dawn has proven to be a top-notch operations executive at the forefront of emerging technology industries. From the early days of the internet to the burgeoning blockchain industry, Dawn’s work has had an impact on today’s leading tech companies.
1 — If you are investing in startups right now, what blockchain-based business opportunities would catch your eye?
For me, I would focus on apps that affect the widest possible range of people, preferably in terms of inclusivity. Projects that allow new communities to connect, create, and earn money will ultimately have the greatest impact, creating the greatest value in the world.
2 — What is the most innovative blockchain use case you have seen? It may not be the most likely to succeed!
For me, the most innovative use cases are still the first ones people talked about in the early days of Bitcoin. Every person on earth (who has access to the internet) has the ability to participate in a global financial system that is not owned by any government.
This is a very difficult problem to solve, and I am proud that Netki was involved in getting the first country to join the Bitcoin blockchain. Allowing 4 million people to transact and receive funds without paying exorbitant remittance fees makes my heart sing!
3 — When you tell people that you are in the blockchain industry, how do they react?
For non-technical folks, their initial reaction used to be: “Aren’t OMGs all liars?” Thankfully, less and less of that happened. I have worked in technology innovation for over 30 years, so with the growing interest in cryptocurrencies, many of my friends and family have come to me for advice or to better understand the ecosystem.
This curiosity dominates most of my conversations today, although I still occasionally meet people who get all their information about cryptocurrency from Elizabeth Warren. Conversations with these people will definitely require more effort to unravel all the misleading statements they’ve been fed. In general, more and more people are starting to become curious about it, and this is how we change things!
4 – Tell us about a hidden talent – and give us a link to prove it!
My cooking skills are out of this world (pun: last question). I am a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and have trained several Michelin star chefs in Italy, Japan and the US.want to take your chocolate cookie Taking the game to the next level?
5 — Close your eyes and think of a happy place. What do you see?
Quite simply, El Salvador has beaches of black volcanic sand, huge waves, delicious food – bought with Bitcoin of course – and great people.
6 — What do you think of extraterrestrial intelligence and the existence of life elsewhere in the universe?
I have no opinion as I’m not an expert in the field, but how amazing it would be to have another life out there and we’ll be able to explore that someday! ?I grew up watching the original Star Trek series, absolutely love it.Imagine my surprise years later when I meet the real-life Seven of Nine [from Star Trek: Voyager], Jeri Ryan, who became my best friend while cooking together at a restaurant in Los Angeles. While I’m not looking forward to meeting her as a Borg in real life, I think it would be great to be part of a team with a mission to “find a new life and a new civilization”!
The aspirations of the young, ambitious blockchain community:
One of my wishes is WAGMI, where we end up will be spectacular!
