Ethereum will outpace Visa with zkEVM Rollups, says Polygon co-founder

Polygon co-founder Mihailo Bjelic told Cointelegraph in a recent interview that zkEVM Rollups is a new Ethereum scaling solution that will allow the smart contract protocol to surpass Visa in terms of transaction throughput.

Polygon recently claimed to be the first to implement a zkEVM scaling solution designed to reduce Ethereum’s transaction costs and increase its throughput. This layer 2 protocol can bundle multiple transactions together and then relay them to the Ethereum network as a single transaction.

According to Bjelic, the solution represents the Holy Grail of Web3, as it offers security, scalability, and full compatibility with Ethereum, meaning developers don’t need to learn a new programming language to use it.

“When you start scaling solutions, you ideally want to preserve the developer experience. Otherwise, there’s a lot of friction,” explains Bjelic.

According to Sandeep Nailwal, another co-founder of Polygon, the solution will reduce Ethereum fees by 90% and increase transaction throughput to 40-50 transactions per second.

As Bjelic points out, with further upgrades, ZkEVM Rollups could one day process thousands of transactions per second, surpassing mainstream payment systems like Visa.
