It doesn’t matter that the world’s largest video game company, like Activision or Tencent, is entering the NFT space. The developers of Minecraft want to keep these tokens as far away from their blockbuster games as possible.

On July 20, Mojang Studios, the team behind Minecraft, said it would not support or allow the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the game.

Mojang Studios believes that the use of NFTs in games may privilege some users and harm others, as the NFT usage model creates scarcity and exclusion within the player community. As they said when they updated their community guidelines, this situation is a risk they are not willing to take:

“NFTs can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our guidelines and the ethos of Minecraft,[…] NFTs do not encompass all of our communities, but create a scene of rich and poor. “

NFTs and cryptocurrencies have no place in Minecraft Lands.

According to the company’s statement, the use of blockchain technology and NFTs is inconsistent with Minecraft’s values of creative inclusion and shared gaming, as they allow players to earn rewards for actions outside of the game.

Furthermore, Mojang Studios believes that the use of in-game NFTs will change the focus on the fun the game provides, as users will be more concerned with the speculative price of NFTs rather than enjoying their own fun as they have been doing for games. The game has been around for 12 years.

They also mentioned that they oppose the implementation of NFTs due to the hacking and scam problems of the companies that manage these assets, which creates a danger that these tokens are prone to “disappear without notice.” This has happened to many crypto games that use blockchain technology and NFTs to attract users through a game-money model.

The door won’t close forever

While Minecraft developers are currently staunchly against integrating blockchain technology into the game, they say they will study its evolution over time to see if future implementations will be interesting or beneficial. However, they have no intention of doing so anytime soon.

Mojang Studios’ unexpected decision has already wreaked havoc on other projects built around the Minecraft ecosystem. NFTWorld is one of them: to this day, the project has had no problems with the developers and maintained good communication with them.

Hours after Minecraft’s announcement, NFTWorld’s native token fell by more than 58%, creating uncertainty for players who now don’t know what the future holds for the game.
