windVenture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), one of the biggest investors in the cryptocurrency space, raised a record $2.2 billion for its third crypto fund last year. Yesterday (21), a16z officially announced the creation of a new cryptocurrency research team (a16z crypto research). The statement reads:
Today, we are excited to announce the creation of a16z crypto research, a new type of multidisciplinary laboratory that will work closely with our portfolio and others to solve important problems in the field and advance the next generation of networking and science and technology development of.
It is understood that the research team will have two main leaders:
. Tim Roughgarden
A researcher and computer science professor at Stanford and Columbia University, who led the development of algorithmic game theory and the technical issues brought about by Web 3, joined a16z last year as a research advisor.
. Dan Boneh
Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, leading the University’s Center for Applied Cryptography, Blockchain Research (CBR) and Computer Security Laboratory. One of the world’s foremost cryptographers and computer security researchers, author of the definitive textbook on applied cryptography.
Other team members include: Benedikt Bünz, Chief Scientist at Espresso Systems, Valeria Nikolaenko, Research Scientist and Cryptographer at Diem Blockchain, Scott Duke Kominers, Associate Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School’s Entrepreneurship Management Department…etc.
actual research direction
The official said that the research team led by Tim will cooperate with other units (protocol design and engineering, legal supervision, marketing) to conduct research and development on the following four points:
1. Generate ideas to solve problems
2. Write the idea into realistic production-level code
3. Ensuring that our ideas and implementations comply with any applicable regulations
4. Share our findings with the wider web3 community
Concerned about a16z monopolizing the blockchain industry
Although a16z’s achievements in recent years are obvious to all, it can be said that it is the most famous venture capital company in the cryptocurrency industry. But some industry watchers have also raised concerns, questioning that too much venture capital participation and too much influence could erode the decentralization of the cryptocurrency world.
Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter and payment service company Block, said earlier: Web 3.0 just transfers power from existing controllers, such as Facebook and other technology giants, to emerging venture capital funds, such as a16z.
You will not have “web3”. VCs and their limited partners, LPs.
Their share will never be less. In the end, it is nothing more than a centralized entity with a different label.
